Event Description
During the course of the 12th century, there was an explosion of castle-building in Europe. These strongholds, from the cold, gloomy and dirty châteaux to the magnificent fortresses with giant towers and palatial halls, were important symbols of the feudal power, as well as prime military resources for much of the Middle Ages. Nowadays, whether they are considered as romantic towers with damsels in distress or concrete archaeological conservatories, they are still fascinating to scholars and visitors. This workshop will explore the evolution of military architecture in France from the 12th to the 15th century, and present splendid discoveries made during recent excavations.
Atelier en français - for high intermediate and advanced speakers.
About the teacher
Nicolas Prouteau holds a MA in History from the University of Swansea Wales and received his PhD in Medieval History of Art and Archaeology from the University of Toulouse. Because of his interest in the archaeology of medieval strongholds in the Western and Eastern Worlds, he was involved in many archaeological excavations in France, England and the Middle-East (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Armenia). He is now finishing a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Architecture at MIT, studying the evolution of Medieval Cities in the Mediterranean World.
